VICTORIA LEAGUE.

A “BOOK EVENING.”

The fortnightly gathering at the New Plymouth victoria League rooms last night took the form of a book evening, when some original representations of titles were seen. There was a large attendance and much interest and amusement arose when the puzzles were being solved. Over seventy members wore badges designed to indicate the name of a book, and there was a very wide selection of authors, ranging from Dickens’ writings down to a portrayal of “Won by a Neck.” In choosing a badge simplicity naturally had to be taken into consideration, and this was certainly achieved by two

members, who represented “The Sign of Four,” by wearing the numeral in black type on cardboard. “I Will Repay” was taken in lighter vein by the lady who wore the badge “1.0. U. while another portrayed “The Isle of Unrest” by wearing a miniature map of Ireland. A reader of lah Hay was successful in characterising “The First Hundred Thousand” by carrying a piece of confectionery of similar name in a small bottle. A piece of cloth showing some seams was used to denote “The Seamy •Side,” and a photograph of Fleet Street did duty for “The Street of Adventure.” Another photograph,-depicting a cordon of police holding back a crowd in a London street, was used as a sign for Rex Beach’s novel, “The Barrier.” “Two Years Before the Mast” was typified by a sketch showing a mast preceded by the letter Y and two rabbit’s ears, the combination of the last three symbols being read as “two years.” The idea of “The Squatter’s Dream” was a piece of wool labelled at “5s a pound.” A competition was held amongst members as to who could name correctly the titles represented by the badges and the winner was Mrs. Hay, who handed in a list of thirty-five. A vote to decide the most original badge resulted in favor of “Two Years Before the Mast,” which was displayed by the Rev. O. Blundell. During the evening a number of musical items were given, the following contributing: Misses Lambert and Leitch, Mesdames O. Blundell and H. Fraser. A recitation was given by the Rev. O. Blundell.
