MAY DAY.

QUIET IN EUROPE.

COMPLETE ABSENCE OF TROUBLE.

LONDON DEMONSTRATION.

By Telegraph.—Press Assn.—Copyright. Received May 2, 11.50 p.m. London, May 2. May Day passed tamely in Europe, being the quietest for years, and there were no disturbances anywhere. Italian Communists issued a mournful manifesto declaring: “It is the period of Bourgeoise reaction and our day of expiration. We can only blame ourselves.” —Times Service. London, May 1.

One hundred thousand attended the May Day demonstratio’ - in Hyde Park. There were many processions with festooned lorrjes and bands. None of the well-known Labor leaders were present. They explained that they were engaged in propaganda work elsewhere. The srowd keenly heckled some speakers regarding the action of the Triple Alliance in the miners’ strike.

SYDNEY CELEBRATIONS.

BY FERVID SOCIALISTS.

Sydney, May 2. May Day was celebrated by a big procession of unionists through the streets, headed by the Red. Flag, with the singing of revolutionary songs to the Domain, where a monster demonstration was held and fervid speeches* of the anti-capitalistic and revolutionary character delivered from platforms where red flags were flown. Serious trouble was threatened at, one stage when a portion of a Union Jack placed on a pole was burned. A small body of soldiers attempted to rush the platform and capture the flag and some hot scrummaging followed. The soldiers were prevented from carrying out their object. An announcement was made that it was intended that the May Day demonstration should in future take the place of the eight-hour celebration. In the evening a lively Socialist meeting was held in the Town Hall. The speakers denounced the British Empire and some expressed pleasure at the Union Jack incident in the Domain.—-Aus.-N.Z.
