DEPARTING VICEROY.
RETIREMENT OF LORD FRENCH.
Received May 1, 5.5 p.m. London, April 29. Lord French made his last public appearance as Viceroy of Ireland when farewelled by the Royal Irish Constabulary and Auxiliaries in Dublin. Lord 'French said he was deeply grieved that the changes in the Constitution and Government of Ireland necessitated his leaving before the great task they undertook was properly completed, but he rejoiced that their efforts were bearing good fruit, and that they were making good progress towards quieting the distracted country and ending outrage and murder. The auxiliaries were worthy of the trust which they well fulfilled.—Aue. and N.Z. Cable Assn.
