FIRE AT MELBOURNE
By Telegraph.—Press Aasn.—Copyright. Received May 1, 5.5 p.m. Melbourne, May 1. Fire destroyed a seven-storey building in the city occupied by Edward’s Tea Company and several other firms. The damage amounted to £20,000.
NAVAL INQUIRY
Received May 1, 5.5 p.m. Sydney, May 1. At the Cockatoo dock inquiry the general manager announced that he had received instructions to cease work on, the vessels now under construction. This means the dismissal of an additional 400 men.
AUCKLAND WOMAN’S DEATH.
Received May 1, 5.5 p.m. Sydney, May 1. The body of a woman found in Lane Cove River on April 17 has been identified as that of Miss Elizabeth Barnett, formerly of Auckland. There is no clue as to how she came into the water.
