FLOUR MILLS AT WORK.

SOLDIERS’ SETTLEMENT INQUIRY.
Sydney, April 28. Cabinet has agreed to Mr. Ashford’s request to re-open the soldiers’ settlements inquiry on the one point of Mr. Ashford’s moral conduct, which was commented upon by the judge.
SYDNEY CITY RATES.
Sydney, April 29. The city rate on unimproved capital values has been fixed at. 5d in the £. The increase will produce £60,000.
GRIEVANCES OF UNEMPLOYED. Sydney, April 29.
A body of unemployed attempted to force their way into the Treasury and lay their grievances before the Treasurer. The police intercepted them. Some stones were thrown, and the police, using batons, dispersed th# gathering. 1
COCKATOO ISLAND INQUIRY. Sydney. April 28. Giving evidence at the Cockatoo Island inquiry, the general manager at the island said that under the fourfifths principle, which was practised at the island, some employees earned £3 18s daily. Giving particulars comparing pre-war and present costs, the manager said that a cruiser that cost £2,000,000 before the war would now cost £9,000,000, and the gift submarines, which cost £150.000 each, would now cost over £1.000,000 each.
