A CASE OF SUICIDE. By Telegraph.—Press Association. Feilding, April 25. Harold Oates, farm laborer, a single man, aged 50, committed suicide, at Mt. Stewart, near Feilding, on Saturday. He hiad been released from a mental hospital a fortnight ago. He was found with a rifle in his’ mouth. The bullet came out at the top of his head. He had no relatives yi New Zealand.
CONDITIONS AT COAL MINES. Wellington, April 25. During the recent conference regarding the coal dispute, representatives of the Miners’ Federation asserted that the conditions of work in New Zealand collieries were unsatisfactory. The Under-Secretary of Mines has since received a report on the. subject from the chief inspector of coal mines, in the course of which he says: “During the past six months I have inspected all the principal collieries of the Dominion, some more than once, and in no case have I found any serious defect warranting prosecution without further warning. I found the collieries generally satisfactory, and in no case has the workmen’s inspector recently reported the conditions as bad or ‘rotten.’ ”
