Serious religious rioting occurred at AlanthoH, in the Madras Presidency, between Catholics and Protestants. In recent years, it is stated, a number of Catholics have turned Protestant, causing an annual source of strife. During the Catholic epiphany procession an armed crowd of five hundred interfered with the procession and rioting followed. Catholic houses were burned and one Catholic was clubbed to death.
