CHURCH CALL REFUSED.

ARCHBISHOPRIC OF MELBOURNE. DR. CODY TO REMAIN IN CANADA. By Telecrap’..—Press Assn —Copyright. Received April 25, 5.5 p.m. New York, April 24. Archbishop Cody has declined the offer of the Melbourne Archbishopric. Some indication of the deep thought and trial involved in making a decision whether he would accept the Melbourne call is indicated by the fact that Archbishop Cody, ppeaking to the Australian Press Association over a long distance telephone on Saturday evening, confessed that he as yet was unable to make up his mind. He declared it was the most difficult problem in his career. He promised, however, when he faced his congregation on Sunday forenoon that he would positively make a decision and communicate it to his congregation before anyone else. Members of St. Paul’s Church, Toronto, speaking to a correspondent on the telephone after the Sunday services declared that the scene whs very impressive when Archbishop Cody informed the congregation that he had decided to remain at Toronto. Archbishop Cody dictated the following message over the telephone from Toronto: "I am deeply conscious of the importance of the decision and the great opportunity for service the Melbourne call affords in matters ecclesiastical and educational, and from the point of view of humanity. I heartily thank Australian churchmen for the confidence they reposed in me, for I believe a Canadian in Australia might aid in the continued promotion of the fine relations between Australia and Canada, but after Jong consideration I have decided that in view of the undertakings in which I am already engaged in Canada, and the continued opportunities for service in my present position, it is my present duty to remain in Canada. I therefore find it necessary to decline the high honor offered me. I am tremendously impressed by the, call; if 1 could only tear myself in two, alas!” —Aus.-N.Z. Cable Assn.
