Orders for papers may also b© leff with them. MAGISTRATE’S COURT. Mr. T. A> B. Bailey, S.M., presided over the fortnightly sitting of the Magistrate’s Court at Stratford to-day. A first offender, charged with being found drunk on the railway platform, Stratford, was convicted and'fmed ss. CIVIL CASES. Judgment was given for the plaintiff by default in each of the following civil cases: Farmers’ Co-operative Organisation Society v. Melba Loveridge, £39 18s, costs £4 la (id (against separate estate of defendant); Farmers’ Co-op. Organisation Society v. Frederick Jamep Muir, £l9 12s 9d, costs £3 Is; R. Hannah and, Co., Ltd., v. Herb. Hindi £2 8s 2d, costs £1 7s 6d; New Zealafid Loan and Mercantile Agency Co., JLtd.., v. Arthur Edward Belk, £fl Is, costs £2 Os 6d. BREACHES OF BY-LAWS. J. Shaw was charged with ’rising a motor cycle along Broadway at a greater speed, than 20 miles an hour, ..contrary to the borough by-laws. Sergeant Dale estimated defendant’s speed at from 30 to 35 miles an hour, and said he was going so fast that it was impossible to distinguish his number at the time. He emphasised the necessity for'putting a stop to fast travelling in Broadway. A fine of £3 and costs was imposed. David Martin, who was riding with Shaw at the time, was similarly charged, and was also mulcted in a fine of £3 and costs.
David Martin was also charged under the Police Offences Act with having on March 30 placed his motor cycle in such a position in Broadway as to constitute a danger to the public, there being no lights whatever on the machine. Sergeant Dale said the defendant was in the habit of placing hiA motor cycle in front of the police station, about 20 feet from the channel, wh'ich at that portion of Broadway, constituted a real daager to the public. Constable Gill said it was very dark on the night of the offence, and it was impossible to distinguish the motor cycle from any distance. In reply to the Magistrates? Sergeant Dale, said the offence was ndt’ covered, in the by-laws. He added that op the night in question he had seep the mbtor cycle outside the police station at 7.3 Q p.m;, 8 p.m., and 10.30 p.m. The people living in the neighborhood had complained about the matter, and he had instructed Constable Gill to find out who the owner was. The defendant resided at Eltham, and came into Stratford nearly every night. A. fine of 20s and costs was imposed. Frederick Parker, described as an insurance agent of Wellington, was charged with driving a motor car along Broadway at 10.30 a.in. on March 28 .(E.aster Monday), at a greater speed than. 20 miles an hour. Constable Gill gave evidence, in which h£ estimated the speed at from 35 to 40 miles an hour: ‘Henry Bottcher, grocer’s assistant, also gave evidence of seeing the car travelling at an excessive speed. The Magistrate said there was no doubt whatever that the speed was dangerous to the public. y)efendant was fined £3 and costs.

The annual meeting of the Stratford Returned Soldiers’ Association arranged for last night lapsed for want of a quorum, the required number being fixed at 20. The adjourned meeting will be held on Thursday next.
