NAVAL COMPETITION.
BETWEEN AMERICA AND JAPAN. New York, April 21. Mr. Daniels, formerly Naval Secretary, in a speech at Memphis, Tennessee, pointed out that America could not surrender the Yap cables, even if it should mean war with Japan, though that was hardly possible. America would sacrifice every principle for which she fought in the war if she allowed one nation to control that single spot. He added that he did not believe the reports that Japan during the next few years would double her navy. He concluded by saying that it would ruin Japan and bring a diet of corn bread to America for the nations to enter upon competitive battleship construction at this time.
