INGLEWOOD COUNTY.

A PLEA FOR PROGRESS. (From Our Own Correspondent.) There were on view at Newton King, Ltd.’s, Mart. Inglewood, a few days ago some very fine specimens of purple top mammoth and hardy green globe turnip grown by Mr E. A. Chard at his farm, Upper Norfolk Road. That is to nay, within that area of some 1500 acres, the opening up of which Mr. J... 8. Simprnn has so constantly advocated, formerly as a member of the Moa Road Board and latterly as a councillor of the Inglewo.-.l County. This portion of the'.Moa district has for years been classed, generally, as of inferior quality, but Mr. Simpson has consistently upheld the opinion that it only needs intelligence and diligence to make it yield very satisfactory returns. The turnips mentioned provide supporting evidence in favor of that contention, for they were taken from a very good, even crop. This support to Mr. Simpson’s plea for opening up the block, which, he says, is capable of carrying quite a considerable number of prosperous families, must be welcome to him, and must strengthen his position. His contention all through has been that by opening up the Bedford Road from the Lepper Road on the north to the Surrey Road on the south, a distance of some six miles, settler.•• on this very considerable area would be given easy access to existing schools and creameries, so doing away with what now seems to be the necessary building of such establishments.

That is one r point in favor of his side of -the question, but there are others, too, worth considering. Were the Bedford Road opened properly, the traffic of stock and vehicles would be diverted, to a considerable degree, from the main road. Inter-communication throughout the West Riding of the county would be made much easier, to the general advantage of the settlers. And yet another point, worth the attention of the business people of Inglewood, that area would be brought into closer and easier reach of the town, for the journey from the extreme south-west of the county would be very much shortened and improved in every way. But what about the post of carrying’on this work? The reply Is that tliei’e are no obstacles, so far as hills go. The chief dispense would be to provide bridges and culverts to carry the road over the numerous water< courses, as well as the metalling of the road when graded and formed. For these purposes the supply of suitable materia], in the shape of river boulders, is practically without limit and easy of access. If the nitepayers within the area once grasp she notion and agree to work solidly for it, it may be considered a safe thing and certain to be carried out some day, but that some day might easily be hastened in arrival if the business people of Inglewood used their moral influence or persuasive eloquencepretty much the same thing—with those who hold control of such matters, to get their fellow-settlers the benefits they need so much and have so long desired, and no better method of securing this co-operation and support could be devised than that of showing a united determination amongst the ratepayers concerned to achieve their object.
