AUSTRALIAN BUTTER.
RETAIL PRICE TO BE 2s. An application was made to Judge Beeby in the Profiteering Court in Sydney on April 7 for an order —based on a basic wholesale price of 196 s per cwt. — fixing prices for butter for winter months, in order that provision might be made to ensure the storing of supplies to meet a shortage. Messrs. C. E. D. Meares, on beiialf of the New South Wales and Queensland Butter Pool Committee, said the committee was approaching the Court first to suggest a reduction in the wholesale price of butter from 214 s 8d per cwt. to 196 s (Is lid to Is 9d per lb), so .as to bring New South Wales into parity with exporting States. This was suggested in the public interest that the Usual reservation of best butter might be made to meet the winter shortage from June to September. What the committee desired was that the cost of storing, finanemg and insuring 60,000 or 70,000 boxes be provided for. The increase .of 3d per lb would not commence until \june 1, and would end in September. His Honor said that on the whole he thought the proposals of the committee were beneficial to the, public and to producers. Under them stability would, be created, and -the whole question of removing butter from price-fixing Idft open to be dealt with next season. A proclamation would be issued fixing the wholesale price at 196 s and the retail price at 2s per lb, plus extra for prints; this to operate until application was made for an increase to cover cost of storage, insurance, etc., on the butter reserved under the pooling arrangement submitted to the Court.
