By Telegraph.—Press Assn Copyright. Received April 21, 5.5 p.m. London, April 20. Sir Eric Geddes (Minister of Transport), has informed the Jockey Club that the Government has no objection to the racing of the One Thousand and Two Thousand Guineas on Friday, April 29, but no special facilities will be afforded.—Aus.-N.Z. Cable Assn. TURF TOPICS-. A case recently decided in the King’s Bench division, London, was one in which A. J. Wall sued W. C. Warren for the return of £15,000, alleged to have been obtained by fraud in connection with the backing of certain horses. Mr. Justice Coleridge gave judgment for plaintiff for the amount claimed and costs. Wall’s case was that defendant induced him to hand over the money Ijy offering to let him into a betting system, run by himself and a group of wealthy friends, by which he could not lose, and might win a great deal. If the horses backed were scratched he was to> have his money returned. He gave defendant £5OOO to put on Bruce Lodge for the Derby, and £lO,000 to put on Happy Man for the Newbury Cup, and both horses were scratched. He tried to get his money back from defendant.

but failed. Defendant denied the allegation of fraud. The fact of anyone being willing to hand over £15,000 in connection with an alleged infallible betting system makes it easy to understand wl:y many Australian confidence men have experienced little difficulty in getting money in the Old Country. The stallions commanding the highest stud fees In America this year are: Broomstick, £500; Negofol and Peter Pan, £4OO each; Asegal, Fair Play, and Whisk Broom 11., £3OO each; Hourless, Pennant, Sweep and Ultimus £2OO each; and Ballot, Black Toney, Brown Prince, Chiele, Johren, North Star 111., Short Grass, Thunderer, Trap Rock, Uncle, and Wrack, £lOO each.

Recently the Opotiki Cup, of £l3O and a rropty, was won by Royal Irish, who Is rising thirteen. He is owned by the Ellerslie trainer, J. Wllilamson, for whom he has won about £5OOO in stakes.

Nowadays one cannot judge the age of femininity by dress alone. A demure lass approached the totalisator window at the Gore races (says an exchange) and asked for a ticket. '‘l’m afraid I can’t give it to you; you are not of age,” said the man behind the aperture. “Oh, you’ve made a mistake; look at my teeth,” came the quick response. This year’s Kentucky Derby carries 50,000 dollars (£lO,OOO at pre-war rate of exchange) added money, of which 10,000 dollars goes to the second horse, 5000 dollars to third, and 1000 dollars to fourth. The twenty-five principal races to be run in Kentucky this spring carry a total of 212,500 dollars (£42,000), .which shows there is plenty of money for racing in the State mentioned. Although the Kentucky Derby wil be run next month, entries did not close until Februarj’ of this year. This gave owners an excellent chance of knowing wl-ether their horses were possibilities at the time of nomination. The entrance fee was £5, and it wll cost, another £5O to start, aceptance being declared the day prior to the race. The following from the Lexington Thoroughbred Record shows a thoroughbred can stand a lot without being knocked out: “David Craig astonished the racing public at New Orleans in February by winning a one and onesixteenth mile race, and then came out. three days later and won another. Two races In one week by a horse that was a competitor in the 300-mile Endurance Test last fall, over hard roads, with about 2501 b on his back. His performance is a good illustration of what a. thoroughbred horse can do. The dopesters 'figgered’ that because of the strenuous 300 miles contest David Craig would be of no further use as a racing tool. His trainer, regardless of public opinion, got him ready, and received as high as 16 to 1 against his chance.
