STEAMER SERVICES.
SOUTHERN PORTS TO NEW PLYMOUTH. The Taranaki Chamber of Commerce* recently made strong representations tq the Union Company that though the ex* tra 2s fid per ton freight on South Is* land produce, asked for by Mr. general of the company, is still being collected, the regular service prom* ised in return has not been maintained. As the result of these representations, the chamber has received the following letter from the manager of the local Branch of the company:— “We are in receipt of a telegram from our general manager stating that the serious irregularity of the service to New Plymouth from southern ports is fully recognised, but owing to unforeseen circumstances cargo tonnage which we proposed to utilise was held up in Westport and Greymouth. They advise that in future the Flora or other vessels will keep the service regularly supplied. We trust that this arrangement will dispose of the present difficulties and that th© service in future will meet all' the requirements of both shippers and consignees.”
