An old colonist and highly-esteemed citizen of Auckland, Mr. Henry Atkinson, died on Monday. The deceased, who had reached the advanced age of -84 years, was born at Windermere, in the Lakes district, England. He arrived in New Zealand in 1'863, on the ship Helbellam, to supervise the erection of a plant for the Auckland Gas Company. Two years later he was appointed manager of the company’s works, and occupied that position for 36 years. In New Zealand he erected gasworks at Waitara, New Plymouth, Hawera, and elsewhere. The death occurred at Dargaville on Saturday of Mr. John Mitchelson, one of the early settlers of Northern Wairoa, at the age of 68 years. The deceased was the youngest son of the late Mr. Alexander Mitchelson, and was born at Nelson Street, Auckland. His parents arrived in New Zealand in 1840, by the ship Anna Watson, which carried the first settlers to Kaipara. Mr. Mitchelson was an engineer, and served his apprenticeship with the old Auckland firm, Messrs. Fraser and Tinne. He had resided at Dargaville since 1873. The Hon. E. Mitchelson, M.L.C., a brother of the deceased, is now the sole survivor of a family of ten. Mr. W. H. Jackson has now completed 32 years of service as headmaster of the Masterton District High School. One of the best known educationalists in the Dominion, particularly in connection with matters affecting the teaching profession, Mr. Jackson was born in Oldbury, near Birmingham, in 1858. He entered the profession in the Old Land, where he was a student at the Saltley Teaching College. He arrived at Wellington in 1883, and was appointed first assistant at the Mount Cook School. After five years there he retired with the rank of headmaster to take up a similar position at Masterton, where he has resided ever since. Mr. Jackson has taken a lively interest in the promotion of technical education, and has also served for a number of years on the Trust Lands Trust. During the past two years, Mr. Jackson has been Mayor of Masterton, holding a dual position, to which the Minister for Education recently referred, as unique in the Dominion.
