The Matapu athletic sports were neld yesterday in squally and showery weather, but although the elements were against them the committee worked cheerfully all day to make the sports a success. THE MATAU-TANGITU MEETING. (From Our Own Corr®pondent.) f The Matau-Tangltu Sports Club held their annual meeting on Thursday, the 14th ult., in Mr. S. J. Kennington's paddock at Matau. Ideal weathdr was experienced, and a most enjoyable day spent. Outside visitors were much l.mpresed by the scenery on the roads giving access to the valley, and were quite enthusiastic about .he Tarata, Purangi, and Kiore saddles, and the wealth of pungas and native growth thereon. The ground was in very good order, and the committee, headed by Mr. D. 8. Holley (chairman) and Messrs. C. H. Larsen and W. McCoard (joint secretaries), are to be complimented on their arrangements. Mr. A. McMullian, who- acted as starter in the absence of the official starter, Mr. C. E. Putt, who was indisposed, gave every satisfaction, and is to be complimented on his performance; The public were well catered for in regard to refreshments, - the booth, which was in the charge of Mesdames J. S. Holley and E. Evans, being very well run, there never at any time being any shortage or delay in serving. The events were all got off up to time, and the public were kept interested and amused right up to the last. The points prize (a gold medal presented by the president (Mr. W. A. Hewitt), was won by E. A. Jones, of Uruti, W. Bertrand, of Purangi, being second, and E. McCoard, of Matau, third. This was very close, there being only 3 points difference between the first and third, the points being scored as follows: first, 5; second, 3; third, 1 Results : Maiden Handicap Chop.—W Bertrand (prize £1) 1; E. and events, and gave the little ones an enjoyable time.
In the horse events, Messrs. H. Hobbs, W. Good and D. S. Holley acted as judges. In tho evening a dande was held In the Matau School, excellent music being supplied by Mr. J. Stockley’s orchestra, and dancing was kept up till .“he small hours of the morning. During the evening a waltzing competition was held, which resulted as follows: —A. J. Telfar and Miss Lambert 1, E. McCoard and Mrs. F. Rolfe 2, Mr. A. He’d and Miss Ford 3. Messrs. R. McMullian and F. Rolfe acted as judges.
As usual with all dances in this district, the ladles were in the minority, and as a result the masculine “wallflowers" were numerous. Mr. L. Ayers was in charge of a side show for non-dancers, and certainly proved himself to be a showman of no small calibre.
YORK ROAD SPORTS. (From Our Own Correspondent.) The combined sports and -picnic was held in the school ground and Mr. Crofskey's paddock on April 2. On account of the flue weather and the Saturday half-holiday a very large crowd assembled, visitors from all parts of the district being present. Mr, R. Masters, M.P., congratulated the secretary and the sports committee on the way the sports were organised, and said he had witnessed here as clean chopping and sawing as he had seen at any meeting for some time. Mrs. Balsom, the head teacher, deserves great credit for the very capable way she carried out the children’s events during the day.
