HOSPITAL COMMISSION.
AUCKLAND SITTING CONCLUDED. PRIVATE WARDS OPPOSED. By Telegraph.—Press Association. Auckland, Last Night. The Hospital Commission concluded its sitting in Auckland to-day. Dr. Maguire, superintendent of. the Auckland hospital, said his hospital did not have enough accommodation for the population it served. He favored the development of hospitals in the four centres as. base hospitals and the outlying districts should be affiliated to them. Mr. Donaldson, chairman of the Waihi Board, said his board did not. object to linking up with Thames, provided safeguards were given so that the Waihi hospital would not lose its identity. Voluntary contributions would be, encouraged if the subsidy was increased. Mr. Alexander Smith, chairman of the Taumarunui Board, said the levies on contributory authorities in the pioneer districts should be subsidised by the Government to the ektent of thirty shillings to one pound and forty shillings on maternity hospitals expenditure. Mr. William Conradi, secretary of the Waikato Board, was insistent that the Government contributions should be a flat rate of £ for £. Regarding the subdivision of the Waikato district he suggested that Hawke's Bay, Lake Taupo and Rotorua should be constituted a district on its own to join up with the Bay of Plenty. '' Auckland, April 19. The advisability of establishing private wards in public hospitals was discussed before the Royal Commission on hospitals. The general tenor of the evidence was against any differentiation of treatment. The question was put to members of the commission with a view to elucidating the position of the ratepayer in good circumstances, who contributed largely to an institution, but is denied admission.
