THE RAILWAY SERVICE.
THE DISMISSAL OF CASUALS. GENERAL MANAGER EXPLAINS. By Telegraph.—Press Association. Wellington Last Night. When the telegram from Taihape in connection with the discharging of casu{lLs from the railways was referred to Mr. McVilly, the general manager of railways, he stated that he could not say to what extent the report was correct. His recollection was that some other work was to be given for married casuals until other employment could be given them. During the war the department had found it necessary to take on a large number of men who could never be taken on the permanent staff. Thfese men had been kept in employment, but now that the war was over the department was endeavoring to reorganise the staff, re-appointing men who had fo.merly been in the service. He quite recognised the work casuals had been performing.
