STEPS TO REDUCE EXPENDITURE. START WITH LOCAL BODIES. By Telegraph.—Proas Association. Auckland, Last Night. The Hon. J*. G. Coates, Minister of Public Works, announces that owing to the financial stringency it has become necessary for the concentration of public. works expenditure on those works whjch are really urgent and essential. As a preliminary step local bod es will he asked to furnish a statement of their balances on authorities for works which have been entrusted to them for expenditure. Where any definite commitment has been entered into it will be honored, but the uncommitted balance of the authority Will be cancelled.
