RACING IN AUSTRALIA.

By Telegraph.—Press Assn.—Copyright. Sydney, April 15. The committee of the Australian Club has decided that the full .prize money shall be pai<l to the owner of David, winner of the Plate at the autumn meeting.

TURF TOPICS.

(By “Moturoa.”) The Manawatu autumn meeting attracted a large crowd on the opening day, Wednesday, but rough weather and a “rough” spin made the outing anything but enjoyable. The heavy rain of the night before made the track a trjfle dead, and the heavy gale which raged throughout the afternoon made racing conditions miserable—to say the least of it. Racing was first-class, fields being exceptionally large, and finishes particularly interesting. This year’s opening day was practically a replica of the opening day last year, unfavorable weather being experienced, and only one first favorite getting home on the day. This, strangely enough, was again in the Gold Cup. However, the public bet spiritedly, and contrary to expectations last year’s tote figures were surpassed, though only .slightly. All things considered, it was a satisfactory opening. Rada was made favorite for the Autumn Plate, but there was plenty of money for the bracketed pair, Bonibrook and Achilleon, and for the Kemball candidate, Rebuff. The latter never looked like getting beaten, and after

racing with Sleeping Beauty for five I furlongs came away and won easily ' from Bonibrook, with Rada (finishing fast) close up third. i Old Gold carried most coin in the 1 Karere Hurdles, Ngakanui and Fisher being best backed of the others. First Line was clearly not ready, and was the outsider of eight runners. Maraetotara and Fisher were prominent for half the distance, Ngakanui dislodging E. Copestake at the fence in front of the stand. Maraetotara’s condition gave i out five furlongs from home, and Old •' Gold, running past Fisher, assumed | command. Old Gold led into the ■ straight, but Fisher moved up as they > ran to the last jump and outstayed the favorite in the run to the judge’s box'. Lord Nagar was a poor third, and Vigilo fourth. The Prince of Wales Handicap was a great betting race, Askari finishing up a trifle better backed than Isabel, Kilrush and Asterina. When the field settled down Asterina. Askari and Verbosity were in the leading division, with Halifax and Borealis next. Borealis ran to the front before turning for home, and Vagabond and Bonnetter improved their positions. Borealis tired in the straight, and Vagabond came on to win comfortably from Bonnetter, Borealis and Verbosity being the next to finish. The winner paid a wonderful price considering his fine form at Ellerslie and at Trentham.

A good field of nine went out for the Manawatu Sires’ Produce Stakes, and betting was principally confined to Tamatete and Absurdum. Tamatete was quickest away, and after taking on everything that came along, had not a kick in him when that past master of horsemen, Gray, brought Absurdum up with a fine run and won the race. Tamatete was unfortunate to lose, and with Gray up must Eighteen were saddled up for the Woodhey Hack Handicap, and betting took a wide range. When the tote closed Makere, on the strength of Gray’s riding, was favorite, but there was big money for Strategy. Birkie, Tairawhiti, Kuia and Lady Kotiropo. The start was an indifferent one, but Sunbath, Larkspur and Birkie got away' well. Amber Tips joined the trio nearing the bend, and Strategy and Tairawhiti closed up. A splendid race home resulted in Amber Tips winning by a neck from Strategy, who finished at a great pace, with Tairawhiti and Super Six close up next. The winner, Amber Tips, ran in the colors of “Nugget” Burchell for some time with indifferent success, and the Wanganui »sportsman sold him recently. Fortunately he had a tenner on his old favorite, and was richer by several hundreds when the race was over. »

There were seven runners in the Gold Cup, and Sasanof (Gray) and Duo (Goldfinch) were most solidly supported. Listowel at once went to the front, and Duo, Sunart and Rouen were next, with Sasanof in the rear. Before turning for home Listowel faded out of the contest, and Sunart led Duo, Rouen and Sasanof into the straight. Duo then looked a winner, but Sasanof came along with a magnificent run and beat the crack three-year-old comfortably. Rouen stayed on ■well, and was a close third, with Maioha next.

Punters were close to the mark in the Linton Handicap, Festivity (Gray), and Malaga (G. Clarke) being the public’s elect. The big field of twentyfour gave a little trouble at the post, and Voluble was the first to jump out. Martian Miss and Prodigal passed him in the run to the home bend, with Malaga and Equitable handy. Malaga was in front at the distance, and- had to be hard ridden to score from Festivity, who came from a long way back. Equitable was a close third, and Warrarwee fourth. Another big field lined up for the Telegraph Handicap, Bindle (Gray), Golden Bubble (A. Reed), and Tigritiya (R. Reed) being favorites in a big pool. The race requires little description, for •Astinome led from end to end, and won easily from Golden Bubble, who just beat Bindle. Chimera was fourth. The Manawatu Racing Club was more fortunate as regards weather conditions on Thursday, the meeting being concluded in a cool, clear atmosphere. The attendance was again large, greater numbers coming per car than on the opening day. The tote turnover was about four thousand pounds above the. figures for the second day last year, so the meeting must be acknowledged as a most successful one. The racing track was very’ fast, Lord Nagar winning the Kairanga Hurdles, one mile and and three-quarters in 3min. 12 l-ssec; Mustard Pot the Stonyhurst Welter, seven furlongs, in Imin. 27sec.; The Hawk the Manawatu Stakes, six furlongs, in Imin. 13see.; Prince Ferouz the Nursery Handicap, five furlongs, in 60 2-ssec.; Rouen the Longburn Handicap, one mile and a quarter, in 2min. 5 3-ssec.; and Listowel the Borough Handicap, six furlongs, in Imin. 13 2-5 sec. Finishes were again fairly close, and form worked out pretty consistently. Racing commenced with the Ava Hack Handicap, a good field of a dozen parading. The Marton-trained Equitable was first choice, with Warrawee, Halcyon, Spare Moment and Beloved also fancied. The start was a good one, and Equitable led from a bunched field. Along the back some bumping took place, and Equitable’s rider was dislodged. Spare Moment led into the straight, but quickly compounded. Halcyon finished best, and won comfortably from Beloved, with Mokattam and Sweet Song next. The Taranaki horse paid a nice price. Sir Roseberry was sent out favorite in the Kairanga Hurdles, with Lord Nagar, Omahu, Maniahera and Fisher next best backed. The eleven runners went off smartly. Sir Roseberry being rushed to the front. The favorite jumped erratically, but his pace between the fences enabled him to lead for over a mile. Lord Nagar cut him down going along the back, and stalling off hot challenges by Fisher and Maraetotara, won handily. Ixenepuru was fourth. Omahu,- Sir Fisher and First Line were wanting in condition, and Maniahera appeared to race unkindly. Gray’s mount. Handy, was warmly supported in the Stonyhurst Welter, and Verbosity, Mustard Pot, Roseneath and Simonides were also well backed. Mr. Keith had a lot of trouble with the fifteen runners, but eventually thev were slipped in fair order. Mustard Pot and Bonny Briar were quickest away, anc* gave nothing else a chance, the former getting the best of it by a bare length. Simonides carried his J 0.9 like a champion, finishing very .fast, i close up third, and it appeared as if Jie i would have won with just a slice of 1 luck in the earlier stages. Roseneath [was a fair fourth, but, the favorite was l never dangerous. Bonny Briar return'ed her supporters a two-figure dividend • •for second.

There were only five runners in the Manawatu Stakes,' Silver Link, in spite of her big impost, being a batter fav-

orite than Absurdum, with The Hawk next in demand. All moved off in line, but Roy Reed took The Hawk to the front and made the pace a cracker. The Hawk came into' the straight with a good lead, but had to be kept going to beat Silver Link, who was a length in front of Absurdum, with the others a long way back. Last year Silver Link downed the mighty Amythas in this race, and though beaten she ran an even better race on Thursday. The Hawk is a slashing good two-year-old, and was never better in his life. That Silver Link could give him nearly two stone and run him to a length in Imin. 13sec., shows that she was not by any means disgraced.

There were a dozen runners in the Nursery Handicap, and the public made Thespian an odds on favorite, with Prince Ferouz next in demand. Thia pair were in front all the way, and after a stirring race home Prince Ferouz just got there by a neck. The Longburn Handicap drew fifteen runners, and a spirited betting race saw Kilrush, Rouen, Vagabond, Paoanui, the bracketed pair Bonnetter and Tenterfield, and Marqueteur backed in that order. For some unaccountable reason Rude was allowed to go out at long odds. The light-weigths Malaga, Idle Talk and Askari made play in the early stages, but Matatua, Rude and Rouen ran through nearing the home bend. This trio had a great race to the judge’s box, Rouen (all out) winning by a bare length from Rude, who was a neck in front of Matatua. Insurrection was fourth, just in front of a bunched lot. Both Rouen and Rude paid good prices, the latter returning more than the winner. Marqueteur had the services of Gray, but the fast pace set in the first six furlongs cracked him up. Punters were right on the mark in the Adderston Welter, Mr. G. C. Ormond’s King Mark colt Tairawhiti being selected from eighteen runners. Super Six was best backed of the others, and Makere (Gray) and Lord Muskerry (McFlynn) also came in for support. Super Six and Bonibrook got the best of the start and led into the straight, with Amber Tips and Tairawhiti handy. Super Six was done with below the distance, and Bonibrook looked like winning Until the favorite and Amber Tips joined in. A great tussle resulted in favor of Tairawhiti, with Amber Tips and Bonibrook next, the trio being separated by necks only. Makere was fourth.

Racing concluded with the Borough Handicap, the public going for a recovery on Bindle (Gray), but the crack horseman’s luck was out. Listowel, Parisian Diamond, Tigritiya and Golden Bubbjp were supported in that order. Golden Bubble was smartest away, ana appeared to be coming home on his own, but Listowel, Astinome and Birkie joined in a hundred yards from home, and the finish was so close that nobody but the judge could decide, which he did in favor of Listowel, with Golden Bubble, Birkie and Astinome next, noses between each. Bindle was fourth.

Winning riders at the meeting were A. Reed, H. Gray and R. S. Bagby two each, W. H. Bowden, J. Campbell, H. Stuart, G. Clarke, H. Ryder, A. McCormack, A. H. Burt, M. McCarten, R. Reed and G. Young one each. The principal winning owners were: W. G. Stead £985, R. Hepner £765, Estate late W. J. Douglas £655, W. R. Kembali £585, G.. M. Currie £430, K. Williams £420, G. A. Palmer £350, H. A. Knight £350, H. J. Palmer £315, F. Danes £2BO, S. Major £270, G. C. Ormond £270, W. Duncan £265, G. B. Starky £250, M. Jury £2lO, and J. Molloy £2OO. Mr. A. Alexander won £l5O with Silver Link.

Rouen’s victory in the Longburn Handicap on Thursday under 9.2 stamps him as a wonderfully good three-year-old. Last year he won the Nursery Handicap on the second day of the meeting and returned a wonderful dividend. Like Silver Linjc and Mustard Pot he shows a liking for the Awapuni course. The Hawke’s Bay autumn meeting takes place on Wednesday and Thursday. On Manawatu form Duo, Golden Bubble, Rebuff, Absurdum and Bestir should run well if they go to the meeting.
