NEW PLYMOUTH SITTING. The weekly sitting of the Magistrate’s Court at New Plymouth for criminal business was held yesterday, Air. T. A. B. Bailey, S.M., presiding. ALIENS’ REGISTRATION. A charge was preferred against Hans Hendrickson, and his wife, Elizabeth Hejidricksbu, that, being aliens within the meaning of the Registration of Aliens Act, they • failed to register themselves. Insp*ector Hutton said Hendrickson applied to the police for a permit . to work on the wharf, as he was an alien, but when asked for his certificate of registration he could not produce it. Though he had signed an application for naturalisation in 1900 he had failed to send it in to the department concerned. Airs. Gray and Leo Shotter were charged with being unlawfully on licensed premises (the Okato Hotel) at a time; when the hotel was required to be closed. Mr. A. A. Bennett, who appeared for accused, pleaded guilty. He pointed out that no liquor had been secured, and the men were not drinking. Fines of 10s, with fcoets in each case, were imposed.
CLEARING PROPERTY FRONTAGE. On the information of the county ranger (Mr. B. Tippins), Patrick Barry was charged with failing to comply with an order served on him by the Taranaki County Council under the Public Works Act of 1908. Defendant pleaded not guilty. For the informant, Mr. R. H. Quilliam said a local authority had power to order the occupier of land, fronting the road to clear obstructions, such as blackberry, gorse, and other growth, from the frontage, the idea being that the burden of upkeep should not be thrown on the general body of ratepayers. Defendant had a frontage of eigteen chains to the Veale Road, and the water tables were practically completely blocked by the growth of blackberry and gorse adjoining Barry’s section. After evidence was given for both parties the case was adjourned pending information as to what authority was given by the Council for the issue of the notice to Barry. • AFFILIATION. Hearing was concluded of the application made by Ella M. Shing (Mr. R. H. Quilliam) against S. J. Sutton (Mr. J. C.
