BLASTING AT PARITUTU.
“VANDALISM LIKE' RHEIMS.” PROTEST FROM SOCIETY OF FINE ARTS. The. blasting operations now in progress at Paritutu to enable the New Plymouth harbor authorities to get stone for their harbor works, have caused some concern to the members of the New Zealand Academy of Fine Arts, and the following resolution was passed by the ,eouneil of that body at a meeting on Tuesday:—“That the council of the New Zealand Academy of Fine Arts feels it its duty to express its strong disapproval of the destruction of Paritutu now commenced. This striking peak, .owing to its historical interest and great natural beauty, should really be regarded as the property of the Dominion, and any attempt to interfere with it as much an act of vandalism as the destruction of the Rheims Cathedral.”
