AJHTISANS GO TO RUSSIA. By Telegraph.—Press Assn.—Copyright Sydney, April 13. A statement is officially made by the Trades Hall that a number of unemployed skilled artisans are going to Russia, where engineers, fitters and others are in great demand. The Amalgamated Engineers have 600 men idle on their books. —Aus.-N.Z. Cable Assn. MOUNT MORGAN MINE. Brisbane, April 13. The Arbitration Court refused' to allow the Mount Morgan Company to withdraw the plaint for the cancellation of existing awards, and granted an application by the unions that the company’s books and documents be produced to the court to ascertain the correctness, or otherwise, of the statements made by the manager at the Mount Morgan conference. —Aus.-N.Z. Cable Assn. -THE 44 HOUR WEEK. Sydney, April 13. Mr. Justice Beeby, sitting as a special tribunal, decided that a 44-hour week be observed in 46 trades specified, either 5$ days or, in case of agreement, five days of 8 hours 48 minutes. Mr. F. W. Hughes, managing director of the Combing, Spinning and Weaving Company, giving evidence before the 44hour week inquiry into the leather industry, predicted bankruptcy for Australia if 44 hours was adopted generally. The world would never recover by a reduction of the working hours. Compared with April, 1920, he estimated that the pastoral assets had fallen to the extent of 350 millions. SMALLPOX ON A STEAMER. Sydney, April 13. The steamer Bacchus, from Calcutta, after landing a suspected ease at Melbourne, has arrived at Sydney. There are six cases of smallpox in a mild form on the vessel. All on board have been quarantined. REDUCED CARGO RATES. Sydney, April 13. Reduced cargo rates will operate throughout the Commonwealth to-day.
