PATEA BY-ELECTION.
THE LIBERAL CAMPAIGN. • Mr. H. Atmore, M.P., addressed a large meeting of workers at the Patea meat works at the lunch hour yesterday. Mr. Adams presided. Mr. Atmore had a good reception, no questions being asked. At the conclusion, a vote of thanks to Mr. Atmore and of confidence in Mr. Morrison, who was present, was carried unanimously. Mr. H. Atmore, M.P., addressed a large meeting at Patea last night on behalf of Mr. Morrison, the Liberal candidate, who was at Hawera. At the conclusion of the meeting a hearty vote of thanks to Mr. Atmore was proposed by Mr. Smith, seconded by Mr. Adams, and parried unanimously. No questions were asked and the meeting broke up after giving three hearty cheers for Mr. Morrison. THE LABOR CAMPAIGN. (Communicated.) Mr. Howard, M.P., spoke at Whareroa on Monday night. He dealt with the reasons for the calling together of the recent short session of Parliament. He said that the ostensible reason was the visit of Mr. Massey to the Imperial Conference, but the real reason was the serious state of the Dominion’s finances and the putting on the Statute Book of legislation preventing the calling up of money lent on deposit at call with loan companies and lending institutions, legislation which benefited only the banks. Mr. Howard was accorded a hearty vote of thanks, on the motion of Messrs. G. A. Murphy and McPherson.
Mr. Holland, M.P., addressed a very large meeting at Waitotara on Monday night, and spoke, for two hours, receiving a splendid hearing. He answered several questions, and at the conclusion was accorded a hearty vote of thanks. Mr. Nicholson presided. A large crowd assembled in the Hawera winter show buildings on Monday night to listen to Messrs. W. E. Parry, M.P., F. N. Bartram, M.P., and P. Fraser, M.P., speak in support of the Labor candidate, Mr. Lewis Mcllvride. Mr. T. J. Howell presided Mr. Bartram, who was the first speaker, devoted a considerable portion of his time to explaining the risks which seamen and other workers run through the lack of proper inspection of ships and machinery. Mr. W. E. Parry, M.P., dealt in an able and comprehensive fashion with the distribution of the national wealth and finance generally. He emphasised the evils resulting from the monopoly of land and credit, and strongly urged the Labor Party’s land policy, and establishment of a State bank. The Labor Party stood for all that was best, highest, and noblest in humanity, and its earnest desire was to infuse these qualities into the political and economic life of the country. Mr. P. Fraser. M.P., also spoke on social questions and strongly urged those present to support Labor." A vote of thanks to the speakers and of confidence in Labor and its candidate was moved by Mr. P. O’Dea aild carried unanimously. The meeting closed with loud cheers for Labor and its candidate. A largely attended meeting at Hawera wae addressed last night by Messrs. E. ,T. Howard, M.P., L. Mcllvride, Duggan, of Wanganui, and H. E. Holland. M.P., in support of Mr. Mcllvride’s candidature. The meeting was enthusiastic throughout.
