HOSPITAL PROBLEMS.

THE COMMISSION OPENS. THE SCHEDULE OF SUBSIDIES. By Telegraph. —Press Association Wellington, April 12. The Royal Commission appointed to consider questions connected with hospitals and charitable aid opened its sittings in Wellington to-day, Mr. Vernon Reed presiding.

The Minister of Public Health said that the main reason for the commission was the schedule of subsidies under the 1909 Act which worked out inequitably. The hospital system, as a whole, had worked satisfactorily. He favored local control as much as possible. There was much talk of the nationalisation of hospitals, but the Government could not possibly face the finance of all hospitals. That, however, was one of the questions the commission could consider.
