TURF TOPICS. (By “Moturoa”.) A three days’ racing carnival opens at Palmerston North to-day. The Ma’nawatu Racing Club’s autumn meeting takes place to-day and to-morrow, and the Manawatu Trotting Club’s annual meeting will fill the bill on Friday. The weather has been unsettled there this week, but the tracks at Awapuni are in good order. Fjrst-class acceptances have been received for to-day’s races, and as the acceptors include several winners at Trentham the scale of penalties should be carefully considered. In all. flat races, except the Manawaitu Sires’ Produce Stakes, Manawatu Stakes and Awapuni Gold Cup, winners will be required to carry 101 b extra, horses handicapped at 8.10 or over to carry only 51bs penalty. , Proceedings open with the Autumn Plate, seven furlongs, which has only drawn eight moderate hacks. Bonibrook should be popular. The Karere Hurdles, two miles, should be an interesting race. Fisher and Lord Nagar may be the fittest of the eleven engaged. A. big field will line up for the Prince of Wales Handicap, nine furlongs, including Vagabond and Kilrush, who showed promising form at Trent ham, and Isabel, who shaped attractively at Ellerslie. The Manawatu Sires’ Producq Stakes, six furlongs, has attracted the follow ing: Tamatete 9.0, The Hawk 8.9, Fulsome 8.4, Thespian, Kick Off, Absurdum 8.2, Kilreid, 7.12, Panache, Cleasanta 7.9, Pantier, Danger Zone 7.4, Satin 7.1. Tamatete’s will occasion considerable interest, and with Absurdum and The Hawk likely runners as w T ell a great race ohould be witnessed. The Fordell horse should take a lot of beating.

Twenty-six h-avg been paid for in the Woodhey ’ Hack Handicap, six furlongs, and of these Kuia, Super Six and Yankee Dan appear to have the best of it on the weights and on recent form. Eleus will be an absentee from the Awapuni Gold Cup, one mile and a quarter. but with Sasanof, Duo, Sunart and Rude engaged it is hard to pick the likely favorite. With the sting out of the ground Sasanof should run prominently. Another big field will sport silk in the Linton Hack Handicap, one mile and a distance, twenty-eight being accepted for. Voluble, Festivity and Warrawee should carry big money on the machine. To-day’s racing concludes with the Telegraph Handicap, six furlongs, which has drawn a splendid field. Chimera, Golden Bubble. Bindle and Simonides all dangerous, but if a surprise is in sflpre the lightly-weighted Hepta may be the one to spring it. Eleus, Silver Peak and Roseday have been scratched for all engagements at the Manawatu meeting. The following remain in the Seventeenth Manawatu Stakes, six furlongs, to be run on Thursday: Silver Link 9.8, Listowel 9.5, Raceful 9.0, Truthful 8.12, Askari 8.11, Regard 8.2, Tamatete, The Hawk 7.11, Soldier’s Love, Fulsome 7.5, Absurdum 7.4, Cleasanta 7.2, Koodoo 6.13, Danger Zone 6jlo. Principal winning owners at the Trenfham meeting: Mr. W. F. Desha, £llOO and a gold cup valued at £100; Messrs. R. Heppner, £1125; R. A. McKenzie, £1000; Estate late W. J. Douglas, £700; W. G. Stead, £670; A. Alexander, £600; K. D. Duncan, £525; C. E. Twist, £490; G. M. Currie, £375; W. Stone, £350; K. S. Williams and H. B. Gibson, £3OO. Winning jockeys: H. Gray, with four winning mounts, was the most successful jockey at the meeting. H. Goldfinch and G. Young, with two wins each, were next, while L. Morris. R. Reed, B. Morris, R. S. Bagby, G. Feildjng, W. J. Bowden, A. J. McFlinn and C. McGregor were each successful on one occasion. Rational’s defeat in the Pacific Handicap at Trentham was a rude ehock for an army of Taranaki punters. Weight will stop the best of them, especially when (as t'he time recorded shows) the pace is on all the way. How Tamatete and Mermin would have fared, had they started, is hard to say. With the weights they were likely to have had to carry either would have had the hardest part to do to win. Hipo, Quiniro and the rising two-year-old by Potoa—Latona are now trained at Ellerslie by A. Asprey. A northern scribe reports that J. Williamson recently refused 1100 guineas for Loyal Irish. The son of Absurd was very unlucky to get beaten in the Nursery Handicap at Avondale on Wednesday. He finished very strongly, and was going two to the winner’s one at the end. Daydrift, who won a race at Timaru, has been re-handicapped 24 yards behind in the Manawatu Gold (Trotting) Cup.
