BUTTER AND BREAD PRICES.

STATEMENT BY MR. MASSEY. 'Ey Telegraph.—Press Association. Wellington, April 9. The Prime Minister was met by a deputation of Wellington members of Parliament this morning in reference to the price of butter and bread. In the course of his reply, Mr. Massey, referring to butter, remarked that he did not want to say much, as the position was difficult, and he did not want to express an opinion which might be referred to at a meeting of producers next week. It should Ibe possible to store enough in the summer to carry consumers pretty well over the winter. He knew the butter producers so well that he could not imagine i they would stand out for anything unreasonable. If would be unfair to expect the Imperial Government to sell butter in store at a lower price than the New Zealand Government was prepared to pay New Zealand producers. In regard to bread, Mr. Massey referred to the increased cost of production of Wheat. It would be necessary lor the Government to guarantee a reasonable profit for wheat-growing in order to prevent the country having to import the bulk of its .wheat and flour. The guarantee to wheat growers for next season was approximately 2& less per bushel than this year, so that there was a prospect of getting hack almost to normal so far as bread is concerned.
