PATEA BY-ELECTION.
MR. DIXON’S CAMPAIGN, ■Mr. E. Dixon (Reform) addressed sjl enthusiastic meeting at Westmere on Thursday night. Mr. Ritchie was voted to the chair. Mr. Dixon staved that eee-i ing (Mr. Morrison was announced to Bpeak there that evening, through some mistake, he would hurry through his address, so that his opponent would have ample time. At the conclusion a vote of thanks to Mr. Dixon, and confidence in the Government was carried, on the motion of Mr. Failey, seconded by Mr. Laird. A strong committee was set up. Mr. Dixon addressed a meeting at Mosstown on Friday night. Mr. Smith was in the chair, and the meeting was well attended. Mr. Dixon referred to a return just received showing fihat deposits in excess of withdrawals on the Post Office Savings Bank were £390,000 for the last quarter. This purely was the best barometer of the country’s financial position, and proof of confidence in the Government. At the conclusion several questions were asked, and a Vote of thanks to the speaker was carried unanimously. Mr. Dixon met the suppliers at the Whenuaknra factory on Saturday morning, and. addressed the meeting briefly. At tire cuircluHion a strong committee was formed, with Mr. C. R. Honeyfield as chairman.
Mr. Dixon visited Opaku on. Saturday afternoon, and although the visit was made during a tremendous storm, eight settlers attended. At the conclusion of the meeting a committee was formed. Although the night was stormy, about 50 people attended a meeting addressed by Mr. Dixon at the Waitotara Hall on Saturday evening. Mr. Curry was voted to the chair, and in hie introductory remarks said that Mr. Dixon was not a stranger to Waitotara, having served 14 years on the Wanganui Education Board. Mr. Dixon was not only a successful business man, but in hie early days had had experience in the hardships of bushfarming. At the conclusion of his address, Mr. E. Parsons moved a vote ol thanks to the speaker. This was seconded by Mr. Southcombe, and carried unaniniQUsly. TH£ LIBERAL CAMPAIGN. Mp Morrison addressed meetings oi electors at Rapanui, Westmere, St Johns and Brunswick. At each of the meetings the candidate was accorded a vote of thanks. The addresses dealt with matters referred to in previous reAll the meetings were well attended. To-morrow (Tuesday) night, Mr. T. M. Wilford (Leader of the Liberal Party), Will deliver an address at the Grand Theatre, Hawera, and other addresses under the auspices of the Liberal League will be given on the same evening at patea by Messrs. Veitch and Harry -Atmore, M.P.’s, and at Waverley by Mr. G. Forbes, M.P. At Hawera on Friday night, Mr. Harry Atmore, M.P. for Nelson, delivered a forceful address on behalf of the Liberal candidate. In reply to an in* terjection that there was no difference between Liberals and Reforms, Mr. Atmore asked why was it that extreme Labor attacked’ only the Liberals. .At the conclusion, Mr. Atmore was given a hearty vote of thanks for his address. Mr. Morissey presided.
LABOR CAMPAIGN. (Contributed.) Messrs. H. E. Holland, M2., and W. E. Parry, M.P., attended a meeting of the Freezing Workers’ Union in the Druids 1 Hall, Patea, on Friday night, and ad* dressed the large representation of the members present. Mr. Walker presided, in the unavoidable absence bf the presi-. dent. A unanimous vote of thanks to the speakers and of confidence in the Labor Party and its candidate, Mr. Lewis Mcllvride, was carried unanimously on a show of hands. A meeting in support of the Labor candidate, Mr. L. Mcllvride, was held in the Town Hall, Patea, on Friday night. The speakers were Mr. W. E. Parry, M.P. for Auckland Central, and Mr. H. E. Holland, M.P. (Chairman of the Parliamentary Labor Party. Mr. McDonagh, secretary of the Freezing Workers’ Union, occupied the chair, and introduced the speakers. A vote of thanks and confidence in the Labor candidate was carried unanimously, and the meeting terminated by three cheers for Labor. 5 Mr. McCombs, M.P., and Mr. Howard, M.P., addressed a large and enthusiastic meeting at Kai Iwi on Friday night. Mr. A. G. Goldsbury presided. The speakers were accorded a very hearty vote of thanks for their able and interesting address. A motion of no-confi-dence in the Labor Party was defeated. "labor party. SUNDAY NIGHT MEETING (Contributed.) A large audience assembled last evening at Everybody’s Theatre, New Plymouth to hear the address of three members of the Parliamentary Party, viz., Messrs. McCombs, Parry and Bartram, Mr. Tweedale presiding. The speakers were given an attentive hearing throughout, and were frequently applauded. They advocated the introduction of proportional representation, State banking, and the establishment of a State shipping service. The necessity for free medical attention was stressed and expenditure in armaments was opposed. At the conclusion of the meeting a resolution was carried “congratulating Mr. Mcllvride*, Labor candidate for the Patea seat, oh his mftghificfeht fight, and hoping that when the results are announced on Wednesday that one more name will be added to the Parliamentary Labor group.” It was also resolved.: “That this meeting condemns the action of the Railway Department In dismissing Mr. Mcllvride from the railway service on his decision to contest the Patea seat in the interests of Labor, this method of victimisation being against the common principles of justice and democracy.”
