MEAT AND WOOL.
MR. MASSEY’S BELIEF. Mr. Massey spoke at 5 p.m. at Waverley on Thursday. He had an excellent meeting, there being about 500 people present. The Prime' Minister spoke very much along the same lines as at Hawera, and also dealt with the prospects for meat and wool. He thought that one cause of the meat slump was that America had bought some of our meat, and then for some reason, he did not know what it was, had sent to London, causing a glut. But he did not think that would be so for long, as the British people were great meat eaters, and he anticipated that after the English season, about August next, the position would improve. He could not promise definitely,
but he hoped that would be so. Referring to wool, Mr. Massey said that the hold up wa-s due to Bradford and the Continent not buying. The former could not continue to buy at high prices, and credit was probably the trouble on the Continent. The Germans had deliberately sought to injure the French and Belgian woollen industries, and they had done it. But alSeady those two coutries were getting back, and. when the German reparations question was finished with, and he hoped it soon would be, hfe. believed that there would be a much better outlook for wool. Butter and cheese were all right, and though we were passing through a difficult period he thought that there was j room to be optimistic, and be h:wl every reaso/i to believe we would pull through safely. , x Mr. Massey was accorded a hearty vote of thanks 'and confidence for his address, and the meeting expressed its congratulations to him on receiving the invitation to the London Conference and ‘hopes for a safe journey and a speedy return. . Cheers were given for the Prime Minister on his leaving for Hawera.
