DISTRICT NEWS.

HURWORTH. (From a Correspondent.) A very pleasant evening was spent in thd Carrington School on Monday 4th inst., wheel a very large number of people met to wish Mr. C. D. Chant bon voyage on the' eve of his departure on a trip to England. Mr. Chant, who is now one of tte oldest settlerd in the district, is widely known and respected, and although he is only to be away for about a year, the settlers felt they must tender him a fitting send-off. Tho ladles of the district provided and handed round a most enjoy* able supper, after which Mr. Priest presented the guest of the evening with a solid leatheff brief bag and razor strop an a alight token of the esteem in which he was held, by orib and all. Mr. Chant, who was totally taken by surprise, suitably responded. "For He’s a Jolly Good Fellow” was then sung, and three very cheers given, after which dancing was resumed and kept up till the early hours of the morning, when all went ( home tired but well pleased. Mrs T. King presided at the piano in her usual excellent style, extras being played by Miss Sims and Mr. Flay. Mr. Roy Gilbert acted as M.C., and ■ looked well after everyone. During the eve-4 ning, songs were sung by Mr. Ray Jacksonii and Mr. W. -Eva, both receiving encores,
