HINDU SEEKS TEACHERSHIP.
Auckland, April G. The question of employing a Hindu as a teacher under the Education Board was discussed by the Board last evening. An application from a Hindu for employment as a probationer was re? ferred to the Education Department for its opinion. The reply from the Department stated that there was no objection to the applicant being employed. When this reply was read, the secretary, Mr. Purdie, said he would like the board’s direction with regard to such appointments. Mr. J. Boddie sa.id that, as a matter of principle, he strongly objected to the employment of men of colored races in our schools. There were applicants of our own blood for positions as teachers. The education of our children was of the utmost importance, and it was the duty of the board to exercise extreme care in regard to all appointments. A motion by Mr. Boddie that the applicant be not employed was carried without dissent.
