THE PORT.

INCREASING TRADE. THE QUARTERLY RETURNS. A substantial increase in the'trade of the port of New Plymouth is shown by the figures for the quarter ended March 31. The quantity of cargo handled was 13,490 tons more than in the corresponding period of last year, and the heaviest in the history of the port. A total of 59 vessels traded at the port, including three Home liners, the aggregate • tonnage being 43,299 tons, while imports totalled 25,392 tons and the exports 1.0,133 tons, making a total of 35,525 tons of cargo handled. For the corresponding quarter of last year 52 vessels entered the port, their tonnage amounting to 24,988. Whilst in 1920 there was an increase of two in the number of vessels trading here they were of very much less tonnage than those which visited che port for the quarter just closed. Thy imports for tie corresponding quarter of last year were 17,337 tons and the exports 4698 tons, making a total of 2'2,035 tons.
