FRIESIAN BREEDERS’ ASSOCIATION.
ANNUAL MEETING OF TARANAKI BRANCH. The annual meeting of the Taranaki branch of the New Zealand Friesian Association was held at the Stratford A. and P> Association’s office yesterday, ths president (Mr. C. A. Marchant) occupying the chair in the presence’ of seventeen . members. The chairman said that during ths past year the branch had done much good work throughout Taranaki. Ths balance-sheet showed a credit balance in hand of £2 17s 6d, which would be supplemented by a subsidy from ths New Zealand Friesian Association of 10s for every member in the Taranaki district. This would probably result in the sum of £3O being received. On the motion ‘of the chairman ths balance-sheet was adopted. Mr. C. A. Marchant was re-elected president of the branch on the motion of Mr. Johnson, seconded by Mr. Mellow. In returning thanks for his election, Mr. Marchant said that he would again do his best for the branch. What was needed most for the breed was advertising and propaganda and he anticipated that the branch would continue steady progress. Mr. A. J. Barr was re-elected secretary and was voted an honorarium of £l5 for his services last year.
The whole of the members present at the meeting were elected as the executive.
The chairman referred to the lack of representation of Friesian breeders on the executives of A and P. associations throughout Taranaki. He was on the executive of the Stratford A. and P. Association but there were no representatives of the Friesian breeders on the executives of the Hawera or New Plymouth associations. He proposed that the secretary remind members of thd dates of the annual meetings of the various A. and P. Associations and suggest that they endeavor to have the breed represented on the executives. Several members mentioned that they undexatood the A. and P. associations desired to have representatives of the Friesians on their executives, but it had been difficult in the past to secure that representation. It was decided to carry out the. chairman’s suggestion in the matter. It was decided that Mr. H. E. Johnson he the second nominee of the branch on the Council of the New Zealand Friesian Association. A discussion took place on the necessity for arousing more public interest in regard to the breed, members being of . the opinion that encouragement should be given to the school children to interest themselves jn the Friesian breed as well as other breeds. / Mr. H. Marchant moved that ,it be a recommendation to the Council of the New Zealand Friesian Association that an official demonstration be appointed. The motion was carried, and it was further resolved that if possible a Friesian demonstration be held at Stratford prior to the next spring show and others at New Plymouth and Hawera in the autumn. . It was resolved to communicate with the Jersey Breeders’ Association in regard to protesting to the Government against the increase from £3 3s to £5 5s in the fee "for. entering a cow in a semi-official test.
It was resolved to hold the next meeting of the branch at Hawera on May 14 that the executive be empowered to call a subsequent meeting at Inglewood, with the object of strengthening the membership of the branch in those places. The chairman remarked the progress of the breed in the Inglewood district, stating that two new studs had recently been started there.
