HYDRO-ELECTRICITY
THE WAIWAKAIHO SCHEME. Writing of Monday’s visit by the Eltham delegation to the Waiwakaiho works, the local Argus says:— The complete scheme is a very big affair, and will cost between £400,000 and £500,000 to finish, but that is a matter for future consideration. The main questions at present for possible consumers to satisfy themselves upon, are whether sufficient power can be developed, and whether it can be purchased in bulk and retailed at a satisfactory price to the consumers. The first question is purely for the engineers, and their opinion upon the matter may be safely accepted. The price question can be settled by comparison with the charges in other districts. As a district scheme it is certainly the best that is before the people. The Government scheme need not be taken into consideration at the present time on account of the many years it will be before Taranal i can derive any benefits from it. Those present took a lively interest in all that they saw and heard, and in due course the various delegates will report their opinions. The general tenor of the conversation appeared to ind eate that in the main the visitors were favorably impressed by what they saw. When the big reservoir has been completed it should become a favorite picnic ground. A lake of about 95 acres in area, within convenient distance of v the town, cannot fail to prove a valuable 'asset to New Plymouth.
