The Prime Minister, the Rt. Hen. W. F. Massey, will be in Hawera on Thursi day and will deliver a public address. Mr. E. C. Horner, secretary to the Patea Harbor Board, has been obliged, owing to serious illness, to resign from his position. Constable Duddy, who has been stationed at Normanby for the last four or five years, left yesterday morning on transfer to Watere, Bay of Plenty. Mr. Garnet H. Saunders, of New Plymouth, leaves shortly on a holiday trip to Australia. He expects be absent for about six weeks. A Dunedin me*sage states that Captain Bernech, a retired sea captain in the Union Company’s service, died suddely in the street on Monday night. He was 74 years old. A cable fom Sydney says Dr. Hertz, the Chief Rabbi of the British Empire, has arrived, there. He is visiting the various Dominions in the interests of a Jewish war memorial, which aims at raising £1,000,000. Dr. Hertz sails for New Zealand on May 5. Miss M. Blackie Johnstone, Dunedin University, daughter of Mrs. P. G. Knight, Tataraimaka, has been successful in gaining the second section of her B.A. degree. Miss Johnstone is an old. pupil of the New Plymouth Girl*’ High School. The chairman and members of thp Inglewood County Council, a< the meeting of that body yesterday, made feeling reference to the loss the district had sustained by the death of Mr. Henry ■ Brown, and also by the deaths of Messrf H. A. Haverbier and H, Wilson. It was, resolved to place on the minutes a record of appreciation of the services they had rendered the district, and also to forward letters of sympathy to families. It was also decided to send a letter of sympathy to the relatives of the late Mrs. W. T. Jennings.
