GOLF.

HAWERA CLUB. The weather conditions were ideal for the opening of the season at Hawera on Saturday.. Before play commenced the president (Mr. C. H. Ryan), in formally declaring the season open, referred to the formation of the 18-liole course, which had been made possible through the liberality of Mr. Tonks, who has most generously allowed the club the use of the country lying to the west of the present course. The new portion had been laid out by Mr. J. Sturrock, and would add greatly to the interest of players, overcoming, too, the difficulty due to the increase in number of members. Mixed -foursomes were then played over' the nine new holes, all players being quite pleased with the state of the course and some very good play being shown. There were fifteen pairs, the winners being Miss Glenn and J. Quinn, with a card of three up.—Star.
