RIOTS IN INDIA.
MOBS STONE TRAINS. RIOTERS FIRED ON. CASUALTIES SUSTAINED. 1 By Telegraph.—Press Assn.—Copyright, Received March 30, 5.5 p.m. Delhi,. March 29. Railway strikers in Calcutta are causing serious trouble. Mobs stoned trains and injured numbers of the staff and passengers. Armed guards were placed on the engines to protect the staffs. Troops wiiH machine guns are posted in the chief centres’ of disaffection. The recent riot at Nagpur was accompanied by considerable looting and incendiarism. A big crowd of rioters stoned the police and rescued a number of prisoners. After repeated warnings had been ignored, the magistrate ordered the police to fire, and four rioters were killed and two wounded, while five police were seriously injured.—Aus. and N.Z. Cable Assn. START OF NEW REGIME. TRIBUTE TO LEGISLATORS. Received Marek 30, 5.5 p.m. Delhi, March 29. The Viceroy, proroguing the Legislative Chamber, congratulated the members on the way they had risen to their new and difficult duties, and he said they had shown a sense of balance and responsibility in the treatment of the great questions under the new regime. The first session should go far to dispel the doubts of those who regarded the new constitutional departure with gloomy forebodings, and should hearten those pledged to fight against the forces of disorder and anarchy. —Reuter Service.
