DOMINION NEWS.

PAINTERS’ CONFERENCE. By Telegraph.—Press Association. Christchurch, Last Night. At the painters’ and decorators’ conference the following motions were carried: That the Architects’ Institute be approached with a view to securing separate painting tenders and payments, association members to have preference, and no tenders to be received from other than recognised painting firms; that it be an instruction to the new executive to consider carefully the whole matter of the use of sulphate of lead in place of carbonate of lead, and report to a later conference; that various substitutes be tested to see if they are injurious; that the matter of the training of apprentices be left to the district associations to take action. SAMOAN AFFAIRS. Auckland, Last Night. Mr. C. Roberts, late Chief Justice of Samoa, has arrived, from Apia, and says that the boycott instituted by the natives when the purchase of all goods from whites was banned, was now broken. The position was more satisfactory. He spoke highly of the work done by Mr. N. H. McDonald, Secretary of Native Affairs, who knew how to handle the natives, and also understood their manners. He had lived many years in Samoa, and Mr. Roberts thought he would succeed in his present position.
