A remarkable incident occurred at Boston during the festivities in connection with the visit to the city of O’Callaghan, Lord Mayor of Cork. Irish sympathisers pulled down the British flag which was flying at the home of Dr. Ladd in the aristocratic Back Bay district. Dr. Ladd threw the trampled flag about his shoulders, stepped out into the street and challenged members of the mob who had insulted the emblem. The only answer was hisses.
