The weather was by no means ideal for the sports meeting which was held at. the Opunuko recreation grounds on Saturday under the auspices of the Catholic Sports Club, being very boisterous and threatening. With the exception of a shower In the afternoon, however, the rain held off, enablihg the events to be carried out. The attendance was very fair, and a most enjoyable day’s sport resulted. Particular interest was centred in the horse contests, there being splendid entries 'n each event, whilst the jumping was particularly good, several well-known show ring horses competing. The display given by the maiden jumpers was very good. The judges, Messrs. E. S. Symes (Waverley), and Jr McCracken (Manaia), expressed themselves as disappointed with the horses shown in the farmers' utility class, jiot one being, in their opinion, really sound. The stewards, Messrs, j J. Hickey and R. O’Rorke, ably controlled t the ring, and the torse events were got off without delay. There were one or two falls during the day, but the riders escaped injury. The championship for the best paced horse was won by the New Plymouth show winner Tirau, owned by A. Mitchell. The jumping championships were won by F. Atkin’s Prince Paul, and the pony championship by C. Paterson’s Flora. The championship ribbons, which were beautifully handpainted by the Sisters of the Opunake Convent, were presented to the winners by Mrs. Symes. The athletic events did not draw very large fields, and unless stronger support is forthcoming the committee should seriously consider making the function more of a district stow, adding to the horse classes and including a few cattle classes. The' officials responsible, Messrs. C. Burke (handicapper), J. Bradford (starter), F. Mason and Bert Hickey (judges), got the athletic events through expeditiously. The interests of the children were again in the hands of Messrs. M. Heath and R. I’. Malcolm, races galore beink held, and prac- ; tically every child received a prize. The Federal Band, under Conductor J. Humphries, gave a splendid programme of music during the day to an appreciative audience. The catering was in the hands of a strong ladies’ committee, and was up to the district’s high standard of excellence. The officials deserve to be congratulated on the success of the gathering, and no one ■more so 'than the genial' and indefatigable president, Father Doolaghty, and the capable and courteous secretary, Mr. Jas. Freyne. Detailed results:— HORSE EVENTS. Maiden Jumping.—E. B. Mulligan’s Wild Rose (P. Hopkins) 1, R. Fleming’s King (E. Morrow) 2, C. Patterson’s Nimrod (Patterson) 3. Nine entries.
