OIL RIGHTS.
POSITION IN MATAU DISTRICT. The question of the oil rights held on a number of properties in the Matau district was discussed at a recent meeting of the Matau Ratepayers’ and. Settlers’ Association (writes our correspondent). Many years ago strong indications of petroleum were discovered on different sections and a syndicate persuaded a large number of settlers to grant oil boring rights. The settlers granting the rights were under the impression that no inconvenience would be caused through the granting of these rights and that development of some sort would be effected. So far no development of any kind has been done, and untold inconvenience has been caused when transfers or finance are being arranged. A motion was carried to the effect that steps be taken to have the oil rights on sections in the Matau-Purangi district cancelled, and the secretary was instructed to write to the Commissioner of Crown Lands with reference to the procedure to be adopted.
