Nominations for the Patea byelection, for which the writ has been issued, close on 4, and the election will be held on April 13.

The acting national executive council of the newly formed National Progressive and Moderate Labor Party has unanimously decided to invite Mr. Statham, M.P., to accept the position of national president.

The secretary of the Manawatu Poultry Club is advised by the New Zealand Poultry Association that the Government. intends prohibiting the importation of Chinese egg pulp, but if poultrymen are unable to cope with the demand for eggs £200,0T0 worth of pulp will be permitted to be imported.

Some 89 acres of Crown land, in the North Auckland district, 3000 in the Auckland district, 39,000 in Otago, and 200 in Southland were gazetted last week as set apart for soldier settlement. In addition, 709 acres of settlement land in the Taranaki district, 17,000 in Otago, 2000 in Hawke’s Bay, and 8000 in Otago have been set apart for returned soldiers.

A party of six holiday-makers consisting of Dr. and Mrs. Walker, of New Plymouth, Mr. and Mrs. Pickering, of Suva, Mrs. Neil Tonks, of Wellington, and Mr. E. W. Black, of Auckland, had an excellent day’s fishing last Monday, near Motuara Island, Queen Charlotte Sound. In less than six hours 583 fish were caught. The catch consisted mostly of blue cod, but included a good many" terakihi, and a. few mackerel, “soldiers,” conger eels, and ground sharks.

The Press says: “There is considerable talk in Christchurch just now regarding an incident which occurred at a recent gathering in connection with a local body’s inspection of its works. At the luncheon the customary loyal toast, The King, was proposed, and all the company, with the exception of three members of an important local body, rose to honor it. When a verse of the National Antliem had been sung, one of those present, before drinking the toast, and having in view the three local body representatives who remained seated, gave the toast: “The King, God bless him, and to hell with his enemies!” Golfers will be interested in the announcement by the Duniop Rubber Co. that they have just landed the world’s best golf ball at 48s per dozen. Obtainable from all leading sports depots. Particulars of an auction sale of household furniture and effects, live stock, etc., which is being conducted by T. Lamason, auctioneer, at Denmark Terrace, Midhirst, are advertised in this issue.
