SWIMMING.
XEW PLYMOUTH CARNIVAL. THURSDAY NIGHT’S EVENTS. A swimming carnival was held in the New Plymouth baths on Thursday night, when there was a large crowd present to witness the sport. A variety of races -for school competitors, and also for adults attracted good entries, and some fine swimming was witnessed, though swimmers were handicapped by the cold atmospheric Conditions. Additional interest was lent to the gathering by the presence of Misses Shand and Bristed, who hold the New Zealand amateur championships for swimming and diving respectively. Exhibitions given by the visitors were followed closely and won the hearty applause of spectators. The champions opened with a two lengths’ swim, one fast and one slow, and followed on latter with the crawl and backstroke, trudgeon crawl, diving and the double over. A demonstration of turning, as for racing events, was also given. During the morning Misses Shand and Bristed had met a large number of school pupils at the baths, giving tuition to the girls and boys for a couple of hours. The management of the carnival was in the hands of Messrs. R. Day and E. Clarke, and officials who assisted were: Judges, Messrs. E. Whittle and A. R. Standish; starter, Mr. A. H. Moyes; marksman, Mr. F. J. Eggleton. The visiting champions judged the diving competitions. Details of the events are as follows; Girls under 14.—First heat: N. Pugh 9sec 1, M. Cleaver Bsec 2. Second heat: 1. Kingston 3see 1, B. Coleman 3sec ,2. Final: N. Hunt scr 1, M. Cleaver 2. The winner was not included in the heats. Boys under 14.—-W. and J. Penman dead heat 1. Girls under 18.—O. Penman 2sec 1, E. Christian 2sec 2. Youths under 18.—Rawson 4see 1, Foden ssec and Rickard 3sec dead heat 2. Relay Race, girls’ teams (for Weston Shield). —West End (P. Berridge, G. Hill. J. Cleaver, and D. Ambury) 1, Cen. tral 2. Relay Race, boys (for O. McHardy Memorial Shield). —West End (Holmes, Rakan, Bartholomew and Petty) 1, Central 2. Men’s 86 Yards. —First heat: R. Boon Isec 1, Blennerhassett scr 2, Person scr 3. Second heat: Foden 3sec 1, Collins ssec 2. Final: Foden 1, Boon 2. Ladies 06 Yards.—Miss Purdue 3sec 1, Miss M. Mouatt 3sec 2. Boys’ Diving.—Gibson 1, Petty 2. Men’s 100 Yards. —Foden lOsec 1, Rawson 13sec 2. Men’s Diving.—Blennerhassett 1, McHardy 2. Obstacle Race.—Coleman 1, Penman 2. At the conclusion of the programme, Mr. Day, on behalf of the' New Plymouth Swimming Club, thanked Misses - Shand and Bristed for making the trip to New Plymouth, and at his instance three cheers were given for the visitors. TO-DAY’S CARNIVAL. The Auckland swimmers. Miss Smith and Messrs. Enwright and Champion, who, are to take part in the swimming carnival at New Plymouth to-day, arrived by the mail train last night. Tn addition to competing in the usual events. Messrs. Enwright and Champion, will attempt to lower th-6 record for the 100 yards event. On Monday morning Mr. Enwright is anxious to meet all young swimmers, when he will be pleased to give sortie useful hints.
