HIGH FREIGHTS ON SHIPS.
OWNERS’ REPLY TO MR. MASSEY. INCREASED COSTS. By Telegraph.—Press Assn.—Copyright. Received March 24, 7.10 p.m. London, March 23. In reply to Mr. Massey’is complaints, tht’ -ship-owners offered him the option of taking all their >ytearners at blue' book rates, which, the owners state, after providing for interest and depreciation, would leave a. loss on new steamers and. only a pittance on older vessels. Shipowners point out that their expenses are thrice what they were before the war, and. outward cargo is negligible. They also point out tlxat the Oornmonwealth Line’s steamers are requisitioned from enemy boats, which do not pay taxes, interest or depreciation. Mr. Larkin', interviewed, states that ex-enemy ships arc -subject to interest and depreciation charges equally with other Commonwealth liners. They have obvi'oaiisiy not paid taxation, because all the -surplus revenue is credited, to the State.—Aus. and N.Z. Cable Assn.
