EASTER HOLIDAYS.
ATTRACTIONS IN TARANAKI. TIMES WHEN SHOPS ARE CLOSED.
The Easter holidays commence with the cessation of business to-day and though many shops will be open on Saturday the business community will not resume normal activity till Tuesday morning. An attractive variety of sports gatherings will be held in Taranaki during the vacation. Holidays to be observed by. rthe retailers in New Plymouth during Easter vary somewhat. Butchers close at 12 noon to-day, and all day on Good Friday and Easter Monday, but they will open as usual on Saturday till 6 p.m. Grocery shopping can be done up till nine o’clock to-night, after which the shops will be closed continuously till Tuesday morning. Housewives should note that the practice among bakers differs according to individual firms. Premises will be open all day to-day and again on Saturday. Friday and Monday wilt be holidays, except in cases where shops will open on the latter day for the sale of small goods, though no fresh bread will be available. Drapers and clothiers observe a half-holiday this afternoon and re-open on Saturday. Banks close from Friday till Tuesday, inclusive. OUTDOOR/ FIXTURES. ' '
During the Easter peribd in Taranaki the holidays will be occupied by a number of sports gatherings of various descriptions. Racing followers will be present jjT, large numbers at the Waimate Plains Trotting Club’s annual meeting, which takes place on the Hawera course on Easter Monday, and each year an increasing number of patrons. Special excursion trains w’ill be run. An interesting event for golfers will be the Taranaki amateur championship, to be played on the Waiwakaiho links, New Plymouth, on Saturday, Monday and Tuesday. Outside competitors have entered in goodly numbers, and in addition to the championship games other competitions have been arranged. Play opens at 9 a.m. on Saturday with the first round of the championship. Athletic meetings .at Opunake and Patea ori Saturday should be well patronised. There has been a noticeable revival in this class of gathering, and increasing interest in the sports. Bowlers of the New Plymouth and Fitzroy clubs play matches against a visiting team from St. John’s (Wanganui); The first match is on Saturday morning, New Plymouth meeting St. John’s, and in the afternoon the visitors play Fitzroy. The Tukapa Football Club intend to open their season with a practice match on Saturday. The park tennis club will play a team from Stratford on Monday. EASTER MONDAY PICNIC. One of the most successful picnic outings jn New Plymouth is that held annually on Easter Monday by the Kawaroa Society, and this year the function promises to be a very attractive one, special efforts having been made by the committee to eclipse past records. A feature of the programme will be a number of Highland events. There will be girls’ and boys’ races all day and a hast of of every description. The Taranaki boy scouts will be camping at, the park from* Good Friday till the following Tuesday. The picnic will be followed by a long night dft,nee< In additiqn to to-night’s swimming carnival at the New Plymouth baths, at which the New Zealand champions, Misses Shand and Bristed, will participate, another fixture has been arranged for Saturday afternoon, when the wellknown Auckland competitors, Miss Smith and Messrs. Enwright and. Champion, will be present. A comprehensive programme of races, both for young competitors and adults, has been drawn up. Tha proprietors of Ngaere Gardens announce a special musical programme to be presented on Good Friday, and this should be, a popular resort tomorrow. On Easter Monday a gala day is to be held at the gardens, and special attractions are offered for the chHcfren.
