WAITARA.
(From Our Own Correspondent.) March 21. The local tennis championships were played on Thursday last. The semilinals left Misses M. Walker and Bernsten in, and the final has yet to be played. In the final of the menb games Mr. C. Tate won two games outright and thus gained the honor. The Anglican Sunday school picnic is to be held on the Waipapu beach on Thursday, March 31. Mr. G R. Groll, superintendent engineer for Messrs T. Borthwick and {Sons’ works, is at present on his periodical visit here.
Two young ladies connected with London Gaiety Company are the Misses Claridge, daughters of Dr Ciaridge, at one time a resident here. Another artist is Miss Vy. Rowe, daughter of Mr. Rowe, one time bank manager of the Bank of New South Wales, Inglewood.
The Clifton Football Club held its annual meeting on Friday last. Mr Den George presided. The report congratulated the members on the successful season last year. The finances were satisfactory. . Opening with a credit of £l2 14s lOd, the club finished up with a credit of £l'sB ss. The excellent results were due chiefly to the splendid ladies' committee. The election of officers resulted: Patron, Mr W. T. Jennings; president, Mr. D. George; vicepresident, Mr. L. Birdling; club captain, Mr. M. Cain; senior and first junior selector, Mr. G. Marshall; second juniorselector, Mr. W. Turner;* committee, Messrs. W. Telfar, M. Cain, A. Lash, S. George, G. N Skelton; auditor, Mr L. Sampson: delegates to Rugby Union, Messrs. Den George (seniors) and T. Taylor (juniors); secretary and treasurer, Mr. H. Spurdie. • The opening day was fixed for Saturday, April 2. The matter of fixing days for matches was left to the committee to, arrange. Votes of sympathy were passed to Mr. W. T. Jennings, M.P., and to Mr. Jas. McLeod in the loss they had sustained through the death of their wives. I understand that the retail shops in Waitara are observing Thursday lialfholidav this week and keeping open al« day on Saturday, excepting tITe grocers, who, under the grocers’ award, are compelled to close their shops on Saturday and can remain open on Thursday until 9 p.m. I understand that the grocers are keeping open only to 5.30 p.m. Mr. H. Spurdie on Friday night attended his 33rd annual meeting of the Clifton Football Club. This is a great record and deserving of mention. In replying to remarks of appreciation of his valued services, Mr. Spurdie said he came that night with the full intention of “throwing in the sponge,” but seeing that the old executive were back in office and they still pressed for his services,* he would carry on for another year.
