Mr. E. P. Webster, president of the Taranaki Chamber of Commerce, left yesterday on a business trip through the Oh ura. A telegram from Timaru Bays Mr. F. J. Rolleston, solicitor, and chairman of the Harbor Board, was waited on by a large number representing all sections of the community and agreed to accept nomination for the Mayoralty. The death occurred on Wednesday from cerebro-spinal meningitis of Mr. Duncan • Macara, aged 49, manager of the Gore Publishing Company. He was connected with the Mataura "Ensign for thirty-six years. He leaves a widow and three children. Mr. H. Oakley Browne, formerly of Wellington, has /•onsented to the request of a deputation that he should allow himself to be nominated for the position of Mayor of Wanganui. A Christchurch message states that Sir Thomas Mackenzie has accepted a call to the Legislative Council, and it is understood Sir James Carroll will shortly be offered a seat in the Coun-
The Rev. John Wilkinson, vicar of St. Aidan’s Church, Remuera, and Mrs. Wilkinson, who have been on a visit to Great Britain, returned to Auckland this week. They were passengers on the Corinthic, which arrived at Wellington on Monday.
The annual report cf the Gid Boys’ Football Club, presented at the annual meeting last night, stated: —“It is with much regret that we have to report the death of one of the most promising younger players, Oswald McHardy. As a member of the junior team, lie showed great promise and is a distinct loss to the club. To his parents and relatives we extend our heartfelt sympathy. The sympathy of the club is extended to the president of the Union, Mr. James McLeod, in his recent bereavement.” At a meeting of the Wanganui Education Board on Wednesday evening an official farewell was tendered to the assistant secretary, Mr. 11. J. Thornton, who has been appointed to the position of secretary of the Taranaki Education Board. In congratulating him on his appointment the chairman (Mr. W. A. Collins) said that Mr. Thornton had joined the Board’s service twelve years" ago, and his work had given the greatest satisfaction. On behalf of the board he extended to Mr. Thornton every good wish for his future. Mr. Thornton thanked the board for the kind remarks, and paid a warm tribute to Mr. Swanger, the secretary of the board.—Chronicle.
A gathering of members of New Plymouth insurance companies was held at Mr E. P. Webster’® office yesterday for the purpose of Tarewelling Mr. J. Paton, who has been associated with local insurance circles for many years. Mr. Paton has been chairman of the New Plymouth Unde?*writers’ Association since its inception, and also one of the insurance companies nominees on the fire board since its inception. Mr. K C. Akers, the new chairman of the association, in making the presentation, spoke| of the very high esteem in which Mr. Paton was held by them all, of his untiring work for all matters appertaining to underwriting, and also of his voluntary work for the advancement of sport. In presenting Mr. Paton with a silver entree dish suitably engraved and a silver rose bowl for Mrs. Paton, Mr. Akers stressed the genuine regret felt by nil members at his severance from insurance circles, and on behalf of the loeal underwriters wished both he and Mrs. Paton every happiness in their retirement. * Mr. Paton suitably responded, expressing his regret, at a parting from all his business colleagues and mentioning that all duties undertaken by him in both the spheres of insurance and sport had ever been a labor of love.
