THE HALF-HOLIDAY.
STRATFORD RETAILERS EXPLAIN. The Stratford Half-holiday Association write, under yesterday’s date: We should esteem it a favor if you would accord us a small space m your paper to make one or two corrections in the report of the Stratford Half-holiday Association, which appeared in the Stratford column on Thursday. In the first place, the association disclaims any feeling of antagonism or resentment towards the Eltham people, and the matter was not even mentioned at our meeting. We wish, in fairness to ourselves, to point out to your readers that your representative, whose strong sympathies with the Saturday holiday are well known, made this erroneous statement entirely on his own responsibility, and we wish to give it an unqualified denial The ide# that the Thursday Half-holiday Association was brought into being mainly because of the action of-the Eltham people is absurd. The association was formed to protest against' the change of the holiday on the casting vote of the Mayor, and in direct opposition to the wishes of 95 per cent, of the retailers. We believe that the convenience of the great majority of our customers, and all of our country customers, on whom the greater portion of our businesses depend, is best served by the shops being open on Saturday all day as heretofore; and certainly in the best business interests of the town the change to Saturday holiday is nothing short of disastrous. —We are, etc.,
