STRATFORD IN DARKNESS.

ELECTRIC LIGHT FAILS. BREAKDOWN AT DIESEL STATION. (From Our Own Correspondent.) Stratford, Last Night. Stratford residents had the unpleasant experience of being without electric ’light to-night, owing to a break-down having occurred at the Diesel station. The plant has been unsatisfactory for some time and at Monday night’s meeting of the Borough Council the electrical engineer .submitted what was termed by some of the councillors “a disastrous report.” This report, which disclosed a most unsatisfactory state of affairs, was considered by the council in. committee, and it was decided to take immediate steps to try and remedy the trouble. The engine, however, continued to get mpre unsatisfactory, and on Wednesday night caused a considerable amount of trouble, a complete break-down occurring during this morning. The electrical staff worked very hard in an endeavor to get the engine going in time for to ; night, but were unsuccessful in overcoming the difficulties. The hydro station is not affected by the break-down, but on account of the shortage of water in the river, it was unable to supply sufficient current to supply the town for more than about an hour at a time, and in consequence the has been without light tonight. i The failure of the light came as a complete surprise to most of the householders, many of whom found themselves in the position of having no lamps or candles in their homes. The King’s Cinema Theatre was not affected by the break-down as the company generates its own power. The theatre and the Marble Bar were the only places in Stratford lit by electricity to-night. The Stratford St. Patrick’s day concert in the Town Hall was not in such a fortunate position, and the programme was carried through by the aid of kerosene lamps and candles. Several meetings had to be postponed. The officials of the borough electrical department could not make any statement to-night as to when the public would again be supplied with light and power.
