SWIMMING.
SCHOOLS’ CARNIVAL. LAST RIGHT’S MEETING. A swimming carnival, open to all schools, was held in the New Plymouth baths last night, when there was a large attendance of competitors, parents and friends. The races throughout proved very interesting,' the friendly rivalry between representatives of the various schools putting a keenness into the swimming, and close finishes were uie order of the evening. Rain com-m-nced when the meeting was about half completed, but this did not detract from die genera', interest, and proceedings were carried through. The function was under the general management of Mr. R. Day, and other officials were: Starter, Mr. W. H. Moyes; marksman, Mr. J. Eggleton; judges, Messrs. O. Johnson and- E. GIRLS’ HIGH SCHOOL TESTS. A number of candidates from the New Plyunouth Girls’ High School were examined at the municipal baths on Tuesday afternoon by Mr. N. A. Christiansen for the Royal Life-saving Society’s elementary proficiency certificates, and the following qualified:— Elementary and Proficiency.—Phyllis Greig, Audrey Hasell, Mas!.e Whittle, Edith Smalley, May Ross, Ruth Day, Helen Thomson, Lottie Valentine, Evelyn Palmer, and Dorothy Fox. Elementary.—Clara Alexander and Kathleen Shaw. ' In addition to the above successes, May Smart has been awarded a teacher’s certificate. The examiner stated that all the girls did excellent work, the exhibition being one of the best seen locally, reflecting great credit on the instructor, Miss Burrow. VISIT OF LADY CHAMPIONS. On Tuesday night the New Zealand lady champions, Misses Shand and Bristed, will give exhibitions at the municipal baths, New Plymouth, and a programme for school and adult swimmers has also been arranged. The of the two leading ladies in the sport in New Zealand will no doubt prove a gfeat draw In connection with the function. In the opinion of Miss Bleibtrey, the American champion. Miss Shand ranks among tiio best of leading swimmers, and bids fair to achieving world honors before long. NEW PLMOUTH CLUB.
Advice has been received from the secretary of the New Plymouth Clyb (Mr. E. Clarke) that the application for affiliation to the Wanganui Centre has been approved. The eiub acknowledges a donation of £2 2s from Dr. E. A. Walker.
